Commercial drivers in Tampa Bay have one non-negotiable on their compliance checklist: a current DOT physical and valid CDL medical certificate. Without it, you are off the road. Here is everything you need to know before you walk in.

What Is a DOT Physical?

A DOT physical is a federally mandated medical examination required for all commercial motor vehicle (CMV) operators under FMCSA regulations. It must be performed by a certified Medical Examiner listed on the FMCSA National Registry, not just any doctor or urgent care clinic.

The exam verifies that you are physically qualified to safely operate a commercial vehicle. It covers vision, hearing, blood pressure, cardiovascular health, urinalysis, and a full physical examination.

Who Needs a DOT Physical in Florida?

You need a DOT physical if you operate any of the following:

  • A vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) over 10,001 lbs
  • A vehicle designed to transport 9 or more passengers including the driver
  • A vehicle transporting hazardous materials requiring placarding
  • Any commercial vehicle requiring a CDL

This covers truck drivers, bus drivers, school bus operators, hazmat transporters, and delivery drivers operating larger vehicles throughout Hillsborough, Pinellas, Pasco, and surrounding counties.

What Happens During a DOT Physical?

The exam takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes and covers:

Vision testing - You must have at least 20/40 acuity in each eye with or without correction and adequate peripheral vision.

Hearing assessment - You must perceive a forced whisper in your better ear at not less than 5 feet with or without a hearing aid.

Blood pressure and pulse - Hypertension is one of the most common reasons drivers receive a shortened certification period. Know your numbers before you come in.

Urinalysis - Screens for diabetes and kidney disease. This is not a drug screen. It tests glucose and protein levels only.

Physical examination - Head to toe assessment including neurological, musculoskeletal, and cardiovascular systems.

Medical history review - Disclose current medications, conditions, and any prior disqualifying history. Honesty here protects you.

What Do I Need to Bring?

Bring the following to your appointment:

  • Government-issued photo ID or current CDL
  • Complete list of current medications and dosages
  • Glasses or contact lenses if you use them for driving
  • Hearing aids if applicable
  • Any specialist letters or medical documentation for disclosed conditions
  • Diabetes management records if applicable

How Long Is a DOT Medical Certificate Valid?

Most drivers who pass without restrictions receive a medical certificate valid for 24 months. However, certain conditions result in shorter certification periods:

  • Blood pressure Stage 1 hypertension: 12 months
  • Blood pressure Stage 2 hypertension: 3 months with treatment follow-up
  • Insulin-treated diabetes: annual certification
  • Sleep apnea: annual certification with compliance documentation

If you have a known condition, come prepared with current treatment records and physician notes. This significantly reduces the chance of a shortened certificate or temporary disqualification.
