Renewing your DOT medical card in Florida is a multi-step process that must be completed before your current card expires. Driving a commercial vehicle with an expired card is illegal and can result in your CDL being downgraded to a standard class E license by the Florida HSMV.
Step 1: Schedule Your Physical Early
Plan to schedule your physical at least 30 to 60 days before expiration. This buffer allows you to resolve any unexpected medical issues (such as Stage 1 hypertension) without your card lapsing. Use the DOT Renewal Calculator to check your timeline.
Step 2: Complete Your Physical
Undergo the exam at a certified clinic. Once you pass, the examiner will give you a copy of the Medical Examiner's Certificate, Form MCSA-5876.
Step 3: Self-Certify with the Florida HSMV
You must submit your new certificate to the Florida DMV.
- Go to the Florida HSMV CDL Self-Certification Portal.
- Upload a copy of your new Medical Examiner's Certificate.
- Select your driving category (typically Class A - Non-Excepted Interstate).
- Keep your receipt showing successful upload.
